Exhaust Noise? Why Waterbury Drivers Shouldn't Ignore It

A sudden roar under the floorboard usually means a small exhaust problem has gotten bigger. Here is what the noise tells you.

Exhaust Noise? Why Waterbury Drivers Shouldn't Ignore It

An exhaust system runs the full length of a car, from the engine back to the tailpipe. When one joint, hanger, or section of pipe lets go, the rest of the system takes the load. That is why a quiet car turns loud fast.

A rumble that gets louder when you accelerate points at a leak closer to the engine. A rattle over bumps on S Main Street is often a broken hanger or a heat shield that came loose. A hiss at idle can be a cracked flex pipe, a common failure on older cars driven through Connecticut winters.

Driving on a leaking exhaust wastes fuel and lets fumes travel under the vehicle. On a short trip that is a nuisance. On a long commute out of Waterbury it becomes a real safety problem.

The fix is usually small. A flex pipe swap, a welded patch, or a new hanger can quiet a car back down in under an hour. Wait too long and the whole section has to come out, which costs more.

If your car has gotten loud, bring it by the shop. We put it on the lift, find the source, and tell you what it needs before any work starts.
